Romario Smith

Romario Smith, also known as Ro, tackles imagery from digital media using tactile materials, such as acrylic paint, charcoal, and layered paper, to address the clash of aspects of his identity. Through the unapologetic use of both religious symbols and figures with Queer male erotic depictions, he creates moments of shock, discomfort and wonder to allow viewers to analyze the work for themes and conversations that they would otherwise be blind to due to their own biases. In this series of 13 paper cut-outs, Ro combines imagery commonly found in religious spaces (crucifixion, dove, cherubs, etc.) within penises, along with one of a depiction of gay double penetration heavily inspired by the work of Boisop. Each of these cut-outs come together in one harmonious image of these penises of faith surrounding the double penetration. Referencing the rose window motif found in some churches. Contrasting not only the erotic, but the homoerotic with the typical modesty found in faith that excludes anything outside the heteronormative reflects how Ro views and expresses his own sexuality and faith. This image stands as a symbol for being able to be included within faith communities without the need to downplay your sexuality and be included in the LGBTQ2IA+ community without the need to downplay your faith.
